Doing What Is Right In Your Own Eyes

In the book of Judges, after Joshua’s death, Israel plunged into a 350-year Dark Age of spiritual darkness. Reason being a generation arose who did not know the Lord nor the mighty works He had done for them. The entire book of Judges begins, details, and ends the same with few conquests of their enemies and this testimony:

“In those days, there was no king in Israel, everyone did what was right in their own eyes.” Judges 17:6;21:25.

Actually, Israel had a King, Jehovah, God Almighty! The problem was their hearts. They did not recognize God as their King and thus rejected Him! Israel wanted to be like the Gentile (other) nations, (1 Samuel 8:5). When the Israelites asked for a king, God says “they have rejected me from being king over them,” (1 Samuel 8:7). That was the core of their sin. But God’s plan for Israel was not to let them be ‘like all the nations’! God was their king!

Sadly, this is much like our world today. Everyday the world is going further away from the moral compass of the Lord God! Even professing Christians. Christianity is fast becoming more unpopular. Nevertheless, God has a remnant and is moving powerfully in the hearts of millions! Revival is breaking out in unexpected places.

What about you? Is revival breaking out in your heart? No matter what you feel or think, are you believing God’s Word? Do you rely on His promises? Are you trusting Him? In those days, the children of Israel did not have a bible to refer to. But what they had was God Himself who talked with them directly through a priest or prophet. Leading them out of Egypt, God gave them detailed instructions on what He expected from them. He initiated a covenant with them in which they agreed. He showed Himself to them in His commandments and the works He did for them. They clearly saw the Heart of God in His setting them apart from other nations, protecting them, and providing for them against their enemies. They were a light to the world of how God fought for His own. It wasn’t as if the other nations did not hear of God. They heard and feared Israel but had other gods and trusted in their own beliefs. Trusting in false gods, false religion; the end result then and every time is destruction and oppression.

The root problem is not reading the Word of God. Doing what you think is right, but not according to the Word of God! Proverbs 3:7, “Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD and depart from evil.”  Proverbs 14:12, “There is a way which seem right unto a man, But the end thereof are the ways of death.”

You may not know the Word of God. Never read the Bible. Choose to begin reading the whole Bible of what God instructs in His Word today. It’s an exciting Book!! You will meet God Himself because His Word is a living Word! God will manifest Himself in a far greater way than the children of Israel at that time. They were not born again! You can be born again, with His Spirit living on the inside of you! We have a New and Better Covenant through Jesus Christ! His Spirit comes to abide in you and live through you!

Choosing not to read and study the Bible is still a choice. God says, Hosea 4:6, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you.”

The good news is, it’s not too late to start afresh! First, move forward and give your heart to the Lord Jesus as your personal Savior. Then, go in the direction of God and His Word! Seek Him and follow Jesus teachings. The instability of the world promises confusion and momentary success. In due course death. Both Malachi 3:6, “For I am the Lord, I do not change,” and Hebrews 13:6, Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today, and forever,” declare God is consistent!

No matter how this world changes around us, we can know God is consistent in His love and His goodness! Follow Jesus teachings, Matthew 28:20, “teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you..”

As Christians today, we need to make sure we do not reject the Lord as being the King of our life.

Just turn around!
